Intervention (1993)

Under the patronage of M. François Mitterrand, President of the French Republic, the Academy held its first great Forum devoted to the theme of Intervention at the Sorbonne on 16 and 17 December 1993 in front of 4,000 people. It defined four themes for reflection : A study of the Grounds for Intervention, Public speech in support of Human Rights, Civil Intervention, Military Intervention.

The Universal
& The Particular (1995)

At the invitation of the City and the University of Sienna, the Universal Academy of Cultures organized a conference on The Universal and the Particular on 25, 26 and 27 May, 1995. It also gathered students, teachers and researchers for a seminar at the Theatre dei Rinnovati on the 27 May to discuss the need for, and the feasibility of a Universal Manual against Intolerance.


Intolerance (1997)

On 13 December 1996, in collaboration with the Parc de la Villette, the Universal Academy of Cultures organised an international meeting on the theme of Intolerance in the Middle East which brought together the Ambassador of Israel in France, Avi Pazner, and the representative of the Palestinian Authority in France, Leïla Shahid, together with many specialists on this region of the world.

The Academy also took part in the Forum de l'Ecrit organized in October 1996 by the Ministry of Culture at the Odeon Theatre, and in the Journées de la Cité de la Réussite at the Sorbonne in 1996 and in Marseilles in 1997.

Under the patronage of M. Jacques Chirac, President of the French Republic, the second International Forum took place on 27 and 28 March 1997 at UNESCO and at the Sorbonne on the theme of Intolerance in front of several thousand university students and senior secondary school students. Six themes for reflection were studied : A Conceptual Approach, A History of Intolerance, Religions Faced with Intolerance, A History of the Theories of Tolerance, On the Battlefronts of Tolerance, Ethics and the Media. This Forum was organised with the support of the Ministry of Culture and of Le Figaro. In the context of its partnership with the Universal Academy of Cultures, the French educational Television Channel (La Cinquième) devoted Saturday 29 March to the theme of Intolerance and retransmitted the Round Table held the day before during the Forum at the Sorbonne and which gathered Yehudi Menuhin, Jorge Semprun and Elie Wiesel in a debate chaired by Guillaume Durand.

Memory & History (1998)

In collaboration with the Parc de la Villette, the Universal Academy of Cultures organised its Third Forum on 25 and 26 March 1998 at UNESCO and at the Sorbonne on the theme Memory and History. Four themes were studied : Multiple faced memory, memory and oblivion, instances of memory, Memory and Future. Thanks to a partnership with the television channel Histoire, the sessions of the Forum were broadcasted on television.

On 7 and 8 June 2000, UNESCO welcomed the fourth International Forum of the Academy in its auditorium on the theme : Migrations and Wanderings. Four perspectives were dealt with :

  • the History of Migrations,
  • Stakes and Perspectives,
  • Migrants : Experience of a Human Experience,
  • Model for Evolution : Cultural Cross-fertilisation, Integration, Multiculturalism.

Migrations & Wanderings (2000)

Many public figures were the Academy’s guest speakers, such as : Azzedine Beschaouch, Roger Brunet, Yves Coppens, Jean-Pierre Digard, Altan Gokalp, Joseph-Alfred Grimblat, Julia Kristeva, Denis Lacorne, Dominique Schnapper, Svetlana Slapsak, Omar Take, Alain Touraine, Patrick Weil and Aristide R. Zolberg.
A series of photographs by Sebatião Salgado entitled Exodes were shown on a screen. John Berger read excerpts from his collection of poems " The Third Man ". This forum welcomed 3,000 people among whom many secondary school students who actively participated in the debates.
This event was widely covered by the press and radio, and the Forum was entirely broadcasted on the History TV channel.

In collaboration with the University of Bologna and the Committee for Bologna 2000, the Universal Academy of Cultures held a forum in Bologna on the theme of Information, Knowledge and Truth on 29 and 30 October 2000. Among the themes for discussion were :

  • The Press, Television and Internet,
  • Globalisation in Producing News,
  • Urban Legends in Contemporary Journalism,
  • How to be a Journalist in a Nation without Freedom,
  • Internet : Censoring or Filtering Information ?,
  • Political Correctness and Representing the Sexes and Ethnic Groups,
  • Truth, Truths.
     

On 13 et 14 November 2001, the Universal Academy of Cultures organized the fifth International Forum in the Grande Halle de la Villette on the theme What Globalisation ?

It defined four themes of reflection :

  • History, genealogy, definitions
  • Economy and finance
  • Culture, information, education
  • Ethics, law and politics.
